Greubel Forsey introduces the Balancier QM, the first creation to officially carry the Maison’s newly established Qualité Musée (QM) standard, a designation representing the highest level of hand finishing developed through the brand’s pursuit of artistic and technical excellence.

Limited to only 33 pieces, the Balancier QM reflects Greubel Forsey’s philosophy that every component, visible or hidden, should achieve the quality of a work of art.

Qualité Musée: Naming a Standard of Excellence

Since its founding in 2004 by Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey, Greubel Forsey has placed hand finishing at the centre of its identity.

While this level of craftsmanship has always been present across the Maison’s creations, the Balancier QM marks the first time the standard receives a formal name: Qualité Musée.

Developed further through a dedicated research division within the brand’s Experimental Watch Technology (EWT) Laboratory, QM represents a commitment to pushing traditional finishing techniques beyond conventional expectations.

A Movement Designed as a Work of Art

The Balancier QM features a hand-wound movement displaying:

  • Hours

  • Minutes

  • Small seconds

  • Mysterious power-reserve indication

The movement architecture transforms the calibre into a three-dimensional landscape, allowing the observer to discover different levels of depth and mechanical detail.
Inside the 39.60 mm white gold case, the movement reveals:

  • A deep-positioned escapement

  • Elevated small seconds display

  • Flame-blued steel hands

  • Three-dimensional bridges and components

  • Dual high-domed sapphire crystals

The construction reflects Greubel Forsey’s ambition to create a movement that is equally captivating from both the front and the back.

Seven Finishes on One Bridge

The Balancier QM demonstrates the Qualité Musée philosophy through extreme attention to every component.

The balance wheel bridge alone combines seven different hand-finishing techniques, including:

  • Barrel polishing

  • Flat black polishing

  • Circular graining

  • Hand polishing

  • Straight graining

  • Large hand-polished bevels

Each finish is executed individually, transforming a functional component into a miniature piece of craftsmanship. This approach extends across the entire movement, with all 298 components receiving the same uncompromising attention.

In-House Hairspring: Made From Raw Material to Final Component

A defining achievement of the Balancier QM is the continuation of Greubel Forsey’s in-house hairspring development.

Beginning in 2012, the Maison developed the ability to produce hairsprings internally, from creating the alloy to drawing the wire, shaping it through natural diamond dies and forming the final spiral.

Following the achievements of the Hand Made 1 (2019) and Hand Made 2 (2025), the Balancier QM begins the extension of fully in-house hairspring production across Greubel Forsey’s collection.

The Balancier: Precision at the Heart of the Movement

At the centre of the timepiece is Greubel Forsey’s variable-inertia balance wheel measuring 12.60 mm, fitted with six gold mean-time screws.

The regulating organ contributes to the chronometric performance of the watch while reinforcing the Maison’s commitment to technical refinement.

The escapement also introduces new developments, including:

  • Enhanced escape-wheel geometry

  • Convex pallet jewels

  • Improved light interaction across polished surfaces

These innovations will gradually influence future Greubel Forsey creations.

Invisible Craftsmanship: Finishing Beyond What Can Be Seen

For Greubel Forsey, true craftsmanship extends beyond visible surfaces.

The caseback reveals:

  • Hand-polished winding wheels

  • Bevelled teeth

  • Flat black polished components

  • Hand-finished steel parts

  • Gold plates with refined finishing

A hidden engraved plate inside the movement carries the words “Qualité Musée”, intentionally kept discreet as a symbol of internal commitment rather than external display.
