Hublot and American artist Jeff Koons unveil the MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons, a limited edition of 30 pieces that brings contemporary art and experimental watchmaking together. Part of Hublot’s Exceptional Timepieces collection, the watch explores the idea of cosmic creation through transparency, light and mechanical motion.
The collaboration also introduces a technical milestone for the manufacturer: its first automatic central tourbillon, powered by the HUB9014 calibre with a peripheral oscillating weight.
A Sapphire Architecture
The MP-14 Origin is housed in a 44mm octagonal case constructed from sapphire crystal and titanium. Requiring approximately 534 hours of machining, the transparent sapphire structure reveals the movement and layered architecture within.
Its design draws on the visual language of Jeff Koons’ Gazing Ball works, expressed through a transparent sapphire dome coated by hand with translucent blue varnish. Beneath it, the central tourbillon forms the visual focal point, evoking the first pulse of a universe beginning to expand.
Gem-Set Orbital Rings
Concentric white gold rings set with baguette-cut diamonds and blue sapphires surround the central mechanism. Two rotating rings display the hours and minutes through suspended indicator cubes: a translucent red cube for the hours and a grey cube for the minutes.
Two additional fixed rings carry blue sapphire markers for the hours and quarter-hour positions. Across the four rings, the watch incorporates 202 gemstones totalling approximately 2.6 carats.
The integrated sapphire and titanium bracelet extends the case’s architectural design to the wrist, maintaining the timepiece’s open, sculptural appearance.
HUB9014: A Central Automatic Tourbillon
At the heart of the MP-14 Origin is the HUB9014 manufacture movement, featuring an automatic central tourbillon and peripheral oscillating weight. The architecture eliminates the conventional central winding arrangement, preserving the movement’s open visual structure.
Operating at 3Hz, or 21,600 vibrations per hour, the calibre comprises 594 components and 55 jewels, delivering a 60-hour power reserve.
Two concealed crown systems preserve the watch’s uninterrupted exterior. The winding function is identified by the engraving “ENERGY PULSE”, while “COSMIC ALIGN” indicates the time-setting function
An Immersive Presentation
The presentation case continues the watch’s cosmic theme through an illuminated infinite-mirror installation. LED lighting and a one-way mirror technique create an impression of boundless depth, while a transparent dome echoes the octagonal geometry of the timepiece.
The MP-14 Origin by Jeff Koons also reflects Hublot’s commitment to its manufacture-made watches through the brand’s 5+5 warranty programme, which can extend coverage to up to ten years, subject to the programme’s terms and conditions.
