Santos-Dumont: A Legacy of Innovation

Cartier introduces a new expression of the Santos-Dumont, a timepiece that continues to embody the pioneering spirit of its 1904 origin. Designed for aviation and precision, the Santos-Dumont remains one of the earliest wristwatches created for practical use, now reinterpreted with contemporary craftsmanship and refined materials.

This latest version reflects the Maison’s signature design codes: Roman numerals, visible screws, a circular-grained crown set with a blue cabochon, and a silhouette that remains instantly recognizable. The balance between heritage and modernity defines this evolution.

Obsidian Dial: A Study in Material Mastery

At the centre of this LM-sized model is a gilded obsidian dial. Sourced from volcanic stone, its natural iridescence is created by microscopic air bubbles, ensuring each dial is unique.

Measuring just 0.3 mm in thickness, the material presents exceptional challenges in cutting and polishing. The result is a luminous surface that captures light with depth and subtle variation, elevating the visual identity of the watch.

A Bracelet Rooted in Heritage

Drawing inspiration from the Maison’s 1920s metal bracelets, the yellow gold bracelet introduces a new level of fluidity and comfort. Composed of 394 individual links across 15 rows, each element is precisely machined, finished, and assembled at the Cartier Manufacture.

At 1.15 mm thickness per link, the bracelet achieves a silk-like flexibility, designed to contour seamlessly to the wrist while maintaining structural integrity and refinement.

Mechanical Precision

The timepiece is powered by the 430 MC hand-wound mechanical manufacture movement. Known for its slim profile and reliability, the movement complements the refined case proportions while preserving the elegance expected of the Santos-Dumont line.

Expanded Collection

The Santos-Dumont collection is further enriched with additional LM models featuring silvered satin-finish dials with a sunray effect. These variations are available in yellow gold, as well as platinum, alongside new interpretations in gold and steel.
