Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò: A Dialogue Between Chinese Design and Swiss Craftsmanship

Atelier Wen and Massena LAB Introduce the Inflection Shuò
Atelier Wen and New York-based Massena LAB have joined forces to present the Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò, a limited-edition wristwatch bringing together Chinese design influences and Swiss horological craftsmanship. Presented during Geneva Watch Days 2026, the collaboration is limited to just 50 pieces and is offered in two distinct dial configurations. The first comprises 10 pieces with an all-white-gold dial, reserved for established clients of either brand. The second consists of 40 pieces featuring white- and rose-gold elements, with orders open to the public. Both versions are housed in a distinctive 99.9% tantalum case with an integrated bracelet and are powered by a customised Girard-Perregaux automatic movement.
The Meaning Behind Shuò
The name Shuò, derived from the Chinese character 烁, translates as sparkling, glittering or radiant. The name reflects the visual character of the hand-tremblaged dial, whose thousands of irregular facets create a constantly shifting interaction with light. Although subtle in appearance, hand tremblage is one of the most demanding decorative techniques in traditional watchmaking.
Two Hand-Tremblaged 18k Gold Dials
Both dial variants begin with a base plate crafted from solid 18k gold. The surface is then decorated using hand tremblage, executed by engraving specialist Coralie Mercier on behalf of GT Cadrans.
The technique requires the artisan to continuously oscillate the dial while moving a graver across its surface. The controlled movement gradually produces thousands of tiny, irregular facets. Unlike mechanically produced textures, every variation in the surface is created manually. The process is also highly unforgiving, with a single error potentially compromising an entire dial.
A California Dial Reinterpreted Through Chinese Design
The hour display draws inspiration from the California dial, but the traditional layout is reinterpreted through Chinese artistic references. The hours from 10 through 2 are represented by custom, hand-engraved serif Arabic numerals.
The hours from 4 through 8 feature hand-calligraphed Chinese numerals, commissioned by Atelier Wen. This combination forms one of the defining visual elements of the Inflection Shuò, bringing together two different numeral traditions within a single dial architecture.
The outer sector ring receives additional hand tremblage and is surrounded by a finely engraved huiwen border. The huiwen is a traditional Chinese decorative motif named for its visual resemblance to the Chinese character.
Blue-Filled Numerals and Blued-Steel Hands
The custom Arabic numerals and Chinese calligraphy are filled in blue, matching the blued-steel hour, minute and seconds hands.
The Atelier Wen signature appears in blue at 12 o'clock, while the Massena name is positioned near 6 o'clock in white gold.
The restrained use of blue provides a visual connection between the typography and the hands while contrasting against the warm gold of the dial.
Tantalum: A Challenging Material
The warmth of the 18k gold dials is contrasted by the cooler blue-grey appearance of the 99.9% tantalum case and integrated bracelet. Tantalum is valued for its density, weight and resistance to corrosion, but it is also notoriously difficult to machine and finish.
The material presents an even greater challenge in the Inflection Shuò because the case architecture relies heavily on curved surfaces.
A 40mm Curved Architecture
The Inflection Shuò features a 40mm tantalum case with an integrated bracelet. The design takes inspiration from Chinese architectural forms, with almost no flat surfaces across the construction.
A concave bezel and ridged middle case create additional depth, while the curved bracelet links continue the flowing architecture of the case. The finishing combines several contrasting treatments.
The external bracelet links receive strong vertical brushing, the middle links are mirror polished, and the chamfers are polished with a concave finish. The case is water-resistant to 100 metres and features a screw-down crown in tantalum on the white-gold variant and rose gold on the rose-gold variant.
A Customised Girard-Perregaux Movement
Powering the Inflection Shuò is its GP03300 automatic calibre from Girard-Perregaux. The movement's decoration continues the cultural dialogue established by the dial. Customised, its sweeping bridge architecture takes inspiration from representations of wind in historical Chinese paintings, creating a visual contrast with the considerable density of the tantalum case.
The bridges are finished in ruthenium and feature dramatic anglage and sharp exterior angles. Laser-etched waved côtes radiate from the centre of the movement, while black-polished screws and a 5N rose-gold-plated rotor complete the decoration.
The automatic calibre contains 27 jewels, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 48-hour power reserve. The Atelier Wen x Massena LAB Inflection Shuò is available to order from 26 August 2026 through an enquiry submitted via the product pages of Atelier Wen and Massena LAB.
